Russia will oppose Georgia`s militarization after the country attacked its breakaway republic of South Ossetia in early August and was planning to do the same against Abkhazia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov reported following his visit to Tehran, where he discussed the situation in the Caucasus with Iranian officials. Mr. Ryabkov expressed his concern over the fact that some countries, even non-NATO members, are making another try to support Tbilisi by delivering arms there. Russia insists that Georgia signed a non-use of force deal with South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Under the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan, the EU observers, staying in buffer zones close to the breakaway republics, should provide security guarantees. Having withdrawn its peacekeepers from the buffer zones, Russia continues to accurately fulfill its obligations.
