Tehran,15 January: Majlis Speaker Gholamali Haddad-Adel here Sunday [15 January] warned that Iran would stop implementing the Additional Protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if its nuclear dossier was referred to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
“Based on Majlis ratification, the government is duty-bound to put an end to its voluntary cooperation with the agency (IAEA) and implementation of the Additional Protocol in case Iran’s nuclear file is referred the UNSC,” he underlined.
The Speaker, in his address at Majlis open session, added, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has voluntarily agreed to implement the Additional Protocol to show its goodwill.
“Political reasons are behind the United States’ opposition to (Iran’s) resumption of nuclear research,” noted Haddad-Adel adding, “The US is against the Islamic Revolution and its opposition to nuclear activities is just an excuse.”
Following resumption of nuclear research at lab and collegiate levels under the IAEA’s supervision, he said, some circles launched a propaganda campaign, trying to persuade the world that Iran is a threat to peace and security.
Haddad-Adel stressed that his country planned to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, quoting the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamene’i as saying that Iran was not after developing nuclear weapons.
The official, however, said, “We are interested in continuing negotiations which will help clarify all aspects of the case.
“We are not interested in talks, whose precondition deprives the country of its right to peaceful use of nuclear energy. Negotiation for limitation is meaningless as nobody talks to be deprived (of something).
“If European states particularly the US are concerned about global peace, why have they kept mum about Israel’s nuclear equipment and atomic weapons? Why have they equipped the fake government of Israel with hundreds of nuclear warheads in the region while Israel does not comply with any international regulations? How could they talk of honesty?”
He added peaceful use of nuclear energy was acceptable to all Iranians.
“The foreign-based Iranians have repeatedly announced that the Islamic Republic’s stance is right and deserves the noble Iranian nation,” said the speaker. Addressing the Western countries, Haddad-Adel said, “The 19th century has passed and colonial language does not work anymore.”
