ALU calls for Immediate Closure of Guantanamo Detention after the suicide of three Arab detainees:
Here comes another crime, faced as usual with silence… war crimes, genocide and all acts against legitimacy continue. All measures of justice are brushed aside in relations governed by the law of power rather than the power of law. The American administration practices a hostile policy based on subjugation and violence. It turns all resorts of comfort and relaxation into baths of blood and detentions of torture and suppression of freedoms. The suicide of three Arab Moslems in Guantanamo detention, as a protest against maltreatment, humiliation, torture and brushing all norms and values aside, was not but a means of disclosing the wide scale of this policy, the flagrance of its means and its absolute defiance of the feelings of all people all over the world. What happened inside the cells of Guantanamo detention represents a crime against humanity and shoulders the international community with its responsibilities to abide strictly by the U.N. Charter and the resolutions issued through its different bodies, especially the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the four Geneva Conventions.
The ALU was in the vanguard of all legal organizations and those concerned with human rights to assert the danger of the American policy all over the world, its colonial plans and its pursuit of those defending justice and equality and putting them in the American prisons and detentions located around the world and most of them are in secret locations.
The Secretariat of the ALU, which strongly condemns the abnormal American practices and the situation inside its detentions, especially Guantanamo, stresses on:
First: calling the universal public opinion, legal organizations and those concerned with human rights to exert pressure to immediately close this terrible detention in the context of the wide scale protests against it and after the demand of the U.N Experts Committee and some other international governmental and non-governmental organizations to close it.
Second: calling upon the international community and the U.N organization to conduct a prompt professional and fair investigation regarding the accompanying circumstances of the collective suicide of the three detainees and publish the complete conclusions of this investigation, especially because there were clashes between the detainees and the guards when some of the American military investigators profaned the Holy Qura’n a month before the suicide.
