Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, teacher, and writer. He served for 15 years as a foreign correspondent for the New York Times. He served four of those years as Middle East Bureau Chief before covering the war in the former Yugoslavia as Balkan Bureau Chief and then covered Al Qaeda in Europe and the Middle East From Paris.

Chris Hedges, who holds a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School , has taught at Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University and The University of Toronto. He currently teaches prisoners at a maximum-security prison in New Jersey.

He is also the best-selling author of several books including War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America , Death of the Liberal Class and his most recent Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012) which forms the basis for the talk you’re about to hear.

Hedges’s talk centres on how radical movements have been historically dismantled by the State, including through the institution of the Liberal Class, which he calls a safety valve for preserving capitalism.

A self-described socialist, Hedges launched a law-suit in 2012 against members of the US government claiming that section 1021 of the National Defense Authorization Act allowed the president authority to detain suspects indefintitely without habeus corpus.

Hedges writes a regular weekly column for TRUTHDIG.com. Several of his articles have been posted to the Global Research Website.

The following presentation was given at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba , Canada on September 21, 2013. CKUW and Global Research would like to thank the West End Cultural Centre, as well as Canadian Dimension Magazine and the Uniter weekly journal who sponsored Hedges’s visit to Winnipeg and supplied the audio of his talk.
