July 30, 2003Eyewitnesses told our correspondent in Baghdad that there were a number of casualties among US troops in an attack with mortar shells in Samarra, north of Baghdad. The attack targeted a camp for US troops in the Al-Qal'ah area. The eyewitnesses said the US troops cordoned off the area after the incident.
Eyewitnesses also told an Al- Jazeera correspondent that two mortar shells were fired at the Tikrit Presidential Palace, which has been turned into a US military compound.
Explosions were also heard in Ba'qubah, Diyala Governorate, near the Al-Faris Airport, where US troops are stationed.

A US military spokesman said that three US soldiers were injured in an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) attack in the city of Samarra.
Eyewitnesses in Al-Fallujah said that a US soldier was killed and others, whose number was not specified, were injured in an attack Iraqi resistance men launched against a US forces' convoy, which was passing near the city west of Baghdad. A US vehicle and a trailer received direct hits, which set them ablaze.
In Al-Khalidiyah, which is near Al-Fallujah, an ambulance was the target of an attack at 0430 today, according to eyewitnesses. A woman was killed and the ambulance driver was injured in the attack.
A US tank was attacked by a rocket in the city of Al-Fallujah. The attack caused damage to the tank. There were no reports on human losses.
In the city of Ba'qubah, north of Baghdad, the US soldiers withdrew from the periphery of the children's hospital in the city after a series of attacks, which killed some of them.
Our correspondent in the city of Al-Ramadi said that the US forces have defused a bomb that was planted on a road the US forces use when they move from and to a military base they have established in one of the presidential palaces. An explosives expert in the Iraqi police said that the defused bomb was of the big size that can be remotely controlled. The bomb was planted near Al-Ramadi Hospital, which was named after former Iraqi President Saddam Husayn. (video shows damaged vehicle, Iraqi citizens)
